Welcome to our course on Ethical Practice and the 2021 Revision to the Code of Ethics. As mental health professionals we function under the auspice of our code of ethics which enables us to interact with our clients in a manner that fosters professional practice. The issues of self-care and Cultural Competence have been added and/or revised in this edition of the Code of Ethics and the revisions are important for us to understand and incorporate into our professional practice.

Participants will explore three models for ethical decision-making and a model that has been specifically identified as helpful to new and veteran practitioners. In addition, we will explore cultural competence and how we can demonstrate both humility and competence when working with diverse clients. A self-care plan template is included on the closing page, and you are encouraged to begin work on the document to foster a move toward action. After the lecture, a quiz will be taken to validate your learning. A certificate will be awarded following successful completion of the course.


Outcomes
Participants will be able to:

Identify the purpose of the Code of Ethics in our professional practice and its value to the profession

Explore three models of ethical decision-making

Examine the revisions to the code incorporating self-care and cultural responsiveness

Dr. Laurie Dahley, PhD, MSW/LISW


Laurie Dahley has over 43 years in a career in social work and brings her practice experience along with her academic research to this presentation. With decades of working in medical settings, she has extensive history of working with individuals struggling with grief and loss as well as those who experience depressive episodes. She brings stories from the field, as well as what literature tells us, to assist the participant in understanding the importance of knowing what we are dealing with in this area of practice if we are to be effective with our clients. Dr. Dahley has served on the Minnesota Board of Social Work as well as serving as President of the Minnesota Social Service Association. She is currently a Professor Emeritus at Concordia College having retired after 17 years on the faculty of Concordia College’s Social Work Program. She makes her home in the beautiful lakes area in Minnesota.
