Course Description

This course equips pre-service teachers with the necessary understanding to incorporate literacy into their content classrooms from three perspectives: disciplinary literacy, content area literacy and adolescent literacy.


Objectives
Students will be able to:

Discuss adolescent literacy in terms of literacy development and how/why adolescents may struggle with the literacy demands of a content classroom.

Develop instruction that both provides access to learning as well as supports adolescent literacy development in the content classroom with an emphasis on reading, writing and vocabulary development.

Define discipline literacy, explain its importance to the specific discipline, and create learning environments in which students develop disciplinary literacy skills.

Define content area literacy, explain its importance in the content area classroom, and create learning environments in which students are supported in becoming strategic readers and writers.


Expectations

Readings & Videos

To help you better comprehend, practice, and reflect on the information, teaching ideas and teaching strategies in this course, you will complete an assignment for most modules after you have finished the module’s readings and videos. Assignments vary but are designed to help you reflect on and/or apply your learning to your future teaching.

Quizzes

After each module, there will be a 10-question quiz to assess your learning and understanding of the material. Quizzes are open book. You must receive 80% on the quiz to pass the module. You may take each quiz until you receive 80%.

Dr. Anne Walker is an applied linguist with over 35 years of experience in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). She began her career as a K-8 English as a Second Language teacher and has spent the past 23 years as a teacher educator and professor, preparing teachers to work with culturally and linguistically diverse children in U.S. schools as well as conducting teacher workshops and trainings for English teachers around the world.
