The diagnosis, management, and research for ADHD in girls and women has historically and significantly lagged that of males. Furthermore, ADHD is frequently diagnosed later in girls and women creating a longer period of assault and challenges to academic and social success with a resultant negative impact on self-esteem and well-being.
Thanks to the work of leading researchers for women with ADHD, those of us in the field have become better-versed in the noted differences in incidence, timing, and expression of ADHD diagnosis in females. This increased awareness has led to efforts among clinicians and researchers to address the needs and correct gender disparity in diagnosis and treatment. What remains unanswered, however are questions surrounding how hormonal fluctuations across the female lifespan may impact ADHD expression, symptoms, and response to treatment.
OutcomesParticipants will be able to:
Explore the research and best evidence available for the hormonal influences on ADHD symptoms across the female lifespan at each hormonal transition period (puberty, menses, pregnancy, peripartum and menopause).
Recognize the potential contribution of hormonal shifts during the menstrual cycle on ADHD symptoms and response to ADHD treatment.
Discuss the potential increased risk of women with ADHD for pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), post-partum depression (PPD), and exacerbated cognitive challenges during the climacteric transition to menopause.
Review the research on the efficacy and safety of stimulant medication during pregnancy.
Describe potential hormonal influences on pharmacological response in ADHD treatment in women during the menstrual cycle and menopause.
Provide recommendations for best practices and further research on hormonal influences and contributions to symptoms and treatment for ADHD in women.

Dr. Jane Indergaard is an associate professor of nursing at Concordia College, in Moorhead, MN, USA and a licensed registered nurse in ND and MN. Dr. Indergaard is a nationally recognized speaker, budding author and long-standing provider of education, training, advocacy, and outreach for individuals living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). She has served on a nationally touring expert panel presenting on the Underdiagnosis of ADHD in Women and a frequent author and presenter for podium presentations, webinars, and summit interviews with professional associations such as the Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA), the Tourette’s Association of America (TAA), Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD) and the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA). She is the local co-founder of the award-winning Red River Valley CHADD, an affiliate of the national organization. Dr. Indergaard has been involved in international global health initiatives and development for advancing nursing practice and behavioral health care outreach. Her current research and clinical interests focus on the impact of hormonal fluctuations on women with ADHD, and the design, application, and implementation of Psychoeducational (PE) programming into provider treatment for ADHD.
