ADHD Series Overview

A comprehensive ADHD primer for parents, caregivers, educators, clinicians, social workers, and others within the support network of those with ADHD.

ADHD is a highly prevalent, complex, biologically based neurodevelopmental condition. The brain-based alterations in signaling can dramatically affect one’s ability for self-regulation in many areas of life. As a result, affected individuals are highly misunderstood and can face significant challenges and problems in managing daily responsibilities, meeting common expectations, and achieving personal goals.

The prevalence of ADHD in both child and adult populations is such that anyone working in health care, social service or education will encounter individuals with ADHD and face the challenges of providing the right kind of support in a highly complex and variable condition. Clinicians, providers, social workers, therapists and educators all need to be armed with the right knowledge and attitude about ADHD.

In this comprehensive four-part Series, the most recent scientific understanding and answers about ADHD causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and frequently asked questions are presented. It serves as a solid primer and foundation for including ADHD care in one’s practice or service. Participants will walk away empowered with an updated understanding and an evidence-based skill set to provide the right support, education and advocacy for their clients, patients and students with ADHD.

Objectives

Provide working knowledge and a toolbox of skills for parents and primary caregivers of kids/teens with ADHD.

The three tiers (as described by author and psychologist Ari Tuckman) include strategies to: improve peak mental performance; approach challenges proactively with specific strategies to address executive function and self-regulation; and alter the situation so that demands better fit strengths and abilities. The role of medications, therapy, coaching and accommodations are discussed in detail as they apply within the three tiers of optimizing performance in ADHD.
