ADHD Series Overview

A comprehensive ADHD primer for parents, caregivers, educators, clinicians, social workers, and others within the support network of those with ADHD.

ADHD is a highly prevalent, complex, biologically based neurodevelopmental condition. The brain-based alterations in signaling can dramatically affect one’s ability for self-regulation in many areas of life. As a result, affected individuals are highly misunderstood and can face significant challenges and problems in managing daily responsibilities, meeting common expectations, and achieving personal goals.

The prevalence of ADHD in both child and adult populations is such that anyone working in health care, social service or education will encounter individuals with ADHD and face the challenges of providing the right kind of support in a highly complex and variable condition. Clinicians, providers, social workers, therapists and educators all need to be armed with the right knowledge and attitude about ADHD.

In this comprehensive four-part Series, the most recent scientific understanding and answers about ADHD causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and frequently asked questions are presented. It serves as a solid primer and foundation for including ADHD care in one’s practice or service. Participants will walk away empowered with an updated understanding and an evidence-based skill set to provide the right support, education and advocacy for their clients, patients and students with ADHD.

Objectives

Provide current & comprehensive information about ADHD.

Provide working knowledge and a toolbox of skills for parents and primary caregivers of kids/teens with ADHD.

Provide a primer/refresher on ADHD for teachers, clinicians, coaches, and providers.

Promote awareness and appreciation for the lived challenges and adventures associated with ADHD.

Other courses in the Series:

Course Overview | Part Four

Creating a toolbox of skills/ building a support network-The last course in the series will explore recommended evidence-based strategies and support for ADHD. Clinicians will learn how to assist families and caregivers to create an individualized toolbox of skills, including an in-depth discussion of how to apply accommodations in both school and home settings. Included in this discussion are the concepts of providing scaffolding in the form of a safety net, fading, and the role of structure in successful navigation of ADHD challenges.

Several key areas include detailing accommodations and tactical behavioral management approaches for organization/time management, impulsivity, and discipline for children with ADHD. A brief discussion of facing resistance and how to keep successful management going is included. The presentation concludes by examining critical self-care strategies for primary caregivers and a plan for building a strong support network to include providers, immediate & extended family, friends and community/educational support options.
