Healthcare professionals often face complex ethical dilemmas in the workplace. Some professionals confront the ethical issues directly through decisively applying moral courage. Moral courage requires a steadfast commitment to fundamental ethical principles despite potential risks, such as threats to reputation, shame, emotional anxiety, isolation from colleagues, retaliation, and loss of employment. Morally courageous individuals are prepared to face tough decisions and confront the uncertainties associated with their resolve to do the right thing despite the consequences they may face; moral courage, therefore, involves deliberation or careful thought.
When learning about ethics, we often focus solely on our Code of Ethics and decision-making models. But does this framework leave out an important component? When faced with an ethical dilemma do we have the moral courage to do what our critical thinking process informs us as the best course or do other factors subjugate our decisions? This session aligns with Bryan, Sanders, and Kaplan's work on moral courage and offer participants a chance to understand their moral courage barometer. Personal exploration and case studies will be used to guide our contemplation of this concept in relation to our practice.
OutcomesParticipants will be able to:
Recognize the role of moral courage in our decision-making process when faced with a moral dilemma
Identify factors that could serve as protection or risk factors to our implementing courageous decisions
Strategize ways in which we may move forward with confidence in our ability to practice with courage
